Where to Find FREE Christmas Decorations!

All opinions expressed herein are my own!

A few years ago my neighbor told me about this great trick to making your home smell like you have a fresh Christmas tree when you don’t!  I have been enjoying the wonderful scents of Christmas each year ever since – for free!  How do we do it?

Collect Tree Clippings from the

Christmas Tree Stand!

The gentlemen at the Christmas tree stand removes portions of the tree limbs as a service to the buyers but doesn’t keep those limbs to sell as a bundle to crafters.  Instead, crafty mamas can request these limbs for FREE!  Last year I made a wreath and enough garland to cover an antique farmhouse porch.  This year  I used my clippings on top of my boring kitchen cabinets.

She was right, it brings that fresh tree smell into the home without the expense.

After a couple days of waiting for my kitchen to be clean enough for a “before” picture for you, I gave up.  I have seven children, even directly after cleaning it doesn’t look clean.  There’s nothing I can do about that. Please overlook the toys on the floor, the dog on the rug, caffeine cans on the island, & dishes in the sink and the cleaning supplies on the counter… you get the point (smile).

Note: You have to be sure you don’t have them hang too far over or you have difficulties closing your cabinet doors.

Speaking of my island… did you know my husband made that for me? I wanted an island made out of old cabinets but we were unable to find what we were looking for at an affordable price.  Instead, he used two cubicals, back to back. with a rectangle pine topper.  My husband sanded the top, rounded the corners, and placed a thick layer of lacquer to protect the wood.  He was able to complete this project in one afternoon. Quick, cheap, and useful! We love it and can’t remember what it was like to not have an island in this kitchen.

  • The tree smell wasn’t the smell I remember as a child, even though we had a real tree each year. My mother would take a small pan, fill it about half way with water, peel an orange, hand that to the kids to eat and slice the orange skin into pieces and toss in the pot. Then you add what ever spices to it. I add cinnamon and clove. Boil it and it becomes fragrant throughout the room. My mother would just take it off the burner and put a lid on the pot for the next day. I change mine daily. Be careful not to let the water boil out.

  • Great tip about the leftover branches at a tree stand. I use essential oils in my diffuser to make the house smell good.

  • This is a really nice idea! It’s so much more safe, and of course more natural-smelling, than burning a pine-scented candle. In the past, I’ve used acorns and pine cones from our yard as part of our indoor decorations. Bringing in a part of nature added a really nice feel to our home.

  • I’m totally going to ask the Christmas tree places for those extra limbs. I love how you decorated the top of your cabinets and made a wreath. It also must smell so amazing.
