Keto Friendly Low Carb Protein Drink at Home!
My husband has been an avid user of protein powders throughout our entire marriage. I always assumed they were “just for guys”; never gave them a second thought. Now that I’m battling a difficult bout of gestational diabetes I am looking at protein for the first time — but that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t taste good!
The first drink my husband made for me was horrible! I have no idea how my husband has suffered through with half-prepared protein drinks for this long, but I’m not about to do that! Clumps are a no no. Powder-flavored water? No way y’all! All I needed was 24 hours to figure it out on my own.
Most people add milk to protein powders, but I’m very limited to a strict amount of carbs I can have, milk would have put me too far over my limit for breakfast. What I came up with has just NINE GRAMS OF CARBS!!! That’s almost unheard of, I know, but I was determined to get a flavorful drink under ten grams of carbs — AND I DID IT!
Since this was the first time I’ve used protein powder, I didn’t want to invest too much into my container. I went with the basic, and cost effective, Vanilla Body Fortress Super Advanced Whey Protein. This powder only has 7g of carbs when you use one scoop.
[IMPORTANT: If you’re using this powder for diabetes, you should note that this brand of protein powder does contain Maltodextrin. Maltodextrin is a known cause of sugar spikes. I will am actively searching for another powder so I can continue to cut my spikes down as much as possible. See updates below]
The next item I added was half of a single serve container of :Ratio KETO Friendly “dairy snack”. Yes, these are single serving containers, but I’m only using half for each protein drink and reserving the remainder for my drink the next day. Using half of the container provides me with just over seven additional grams of protein for only 1g carbs! While using the entire container would still keep me within my carb limit, I’m afraid using it all might make this drink too thick to enjoy at breakfast.
Aside from six ounces of water, the final ingredient I added was half and half. Two tablespoons of half and half contains just 1g of carbs! It’s a great keto friendly option for boosting you protein powder, even if you’re skipping the yogurt I mentioned above.
In total, my breakfast protein drink contains 9g of carbs, and 38g of protein!
Low Carb Protein Drink Recipe
Ingredients:
- 6 oz cold water
- 2 tbsp half and half
- 1 scoop Whey Protein Powder
- 1/2 container :Ratio KETO Friendly, coconut or vanilla
Directions:
In a large glass/cup, combine water, half and half, and 1 scoop of protein powder. Mix with a small whisk until combined well. Add :Ratio KETO Friendly dairy snack, continue to mix with your whisk until your drink is smooth.
Alternate Preparation Method: You could toss all of these ingredients into your Ninja blender and let it do the work, however, I found that my Ninja made mine too frothy. Make sure you simplify your blending with a few gentle pulses instead of using the Auto features.
PROTEIN POWDER UPDATE #1
Last week I tried Vanilla Dymatize ISO 100 Whey Protein Powder with 25g of Hydrolyzed 100% Whey Isolate. This brand offers MANY delicious varieties of protein powders. No matter what you’re craving, they have a flavor for you! Check out their Birthday Cake, Chocolate, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Cocoa Pebbles, Fruity Pebbles, Cookies & Cream, and Fudge Brownie powders for yourself, it’s amazing! 25 GRAMS OF PROTEIN WITH ONLY ONE GRAM OF CARBS!! They are getting major thumbs up from me for taste and effectiveness! Buttttt…..
*The only problem with this particular brand is I am pregnant and my doctor advised against me using their powder while pregnant or breastfeeding. Wahhhh!!! Dymatize ISO 100 Whey Protein Powder contains BCAAs. I was advised that there has not been enough research on their effects during pregnancy at this time. NOTE: This is why it is important to speak to your doctor folks!Â
PROTEIN POWDER UPDATE #2
This week I am trying Vanilla Milkshake Premier Protein Powder. Fingers crossed that this one is THE ONE! It offers thirty grams of protein for only two grams of carbs. We shall see! I will update you as soon as I can. Stay tuned ~ Victoria
